REACHING AND RESTING GODWARD

Reaching and Resting Godward
Darlene Edmondson

“I cried to the Lord and He heard me” (Psalm 3:4 NKJV)

In Psalm three, David’s passion sweeps the gamut from somber despair to quiet confidence. Here, David is outnumbered by murderous enemies and runs for his life. Terror gripped his soul as they spit forth insults, declaring that his sin destroyed all hope of deliverance,

“Lord, they increase who trouble me!

Many are they who rise up against me saying, there is no help for him in God.” It would have been horrible enough if they had been foreign adversaries, but consider the fact that it was David’s beloved son Absalom, leading the hunt and commanding the assassins.

Indeed, a painful trial for David as he is tested inwardly and outwardly.

Stretching toward the only One who can rescue, he gazes upward. With confidence, David soaks in mercy, until fear virtually melts away, as if unseen armor protects him as he prayed,

“You, O Lord are a shield for me, my glory, and the lifter of my head.” (Ps 3:3) By verse five, David recovers his strength, refreshing himself with pure joy because of God’s protection. Now, cradled in calm assurance, he lies down for a sweet and peaceful sleep, a gift from God.

Amid the turmoil, David received mental poise by trusting in God.

Likewise, we touch God’s heart when we reach out and rest in Him.
David failed at times, and so do we, but God was always there for him and for all who believe, bringing comfort and true happiness.

Are you in despair like David?

Reach for Jesus with all your heart, resting in Him amidst your fears and troubles.

You will recover your joy and strength like David.

Father, we look to you for help. Thank you for protection as we relax in your strong arms.
