Just 20 years ago, Venezuela’s future was looking bright. Its economy was booming, its people were well-fed, and it was a model for many developing nations. 
And then socialism happened. In a landslide election, Venezuelans voted in Hugo Chavez, who promised more equality, and after his death, they voted to continue socialism under his successor, Nicolas Maduro
Now, Venezuelans stand in line for hours, hoping for a chance to buy what little food there is; supermarkets are out of basic items like toilet paper; violent crime is rampant; and political freedom is a distant memory. Is there a way out? Debbie D’Souza, a native Venezuelan and a conservative activist, explains.
