Sen. Sanders and Sen. Van Hollen launched this shocking attack during a Senate confirmation hearing for Russell Vought, Trump's nominee for deputy director of the Office of Management and Budget.
They argued that Vought's Christian faith should disqualify him from serving in public office--simply because he believes in the bedrock principle of Christianity, that eternal salvation comes through Jesus Christ.
Senator Sanders claimed that believing in Jesus Christ is indefensible, it is hateful, it is Islamophobic, and it is an insult to over a billion Muslims throughout the world.
Van Hollen joined in the fight too, claiming that Vought's Christian beliefs suggest a violation of the public trust.
Bigotry against devout Christians like Russell Vought is inexcusable. But it's also illegal: the U.S. Constitution specifically bans religious tests for government officials, like the one Sanders and Van Hollen tried to implement.
Like I said, these attacks on Christians are becoming increasingly commonplace among top liberal leaders and, as we recently saw, when a Bernie Sanders supporter opened fire on a group of Republican Congressmen, the consequences of their hate speech can quickly endanger our safety and security.
