LORD, TEACH US TO PONDER

Teach Us To Ponder
Anna Darlene Edmondson

“Fix your thoughts on what is true, honorable, pure, and lovely. Think on things that are excellent and praiseworthy” (Phil 4:8 NIV)

From the beginning, we understand God brooded (hovered) over the face of the waters, setting forth creation and the greatest plan.

Ever. Reflection and contemplation often appear in Psalms and Proverbs “As a man thinks in his heart, so is he” (Prov 23:7).

When we ponder negative thoughts, our attitudes turn sour. Yet, in the first Psalm, a man is blessed when he ‘rolls over in his mind’ the Holy Word.

God told Moses’ successor Joshua to meditate on the Book of the Law day and night; for then, he would be successful (Josh 1:8).

Infusing our brains with God-thinking causes us to see the world as He sees it. And then, act accordingly. Notice please, how Mary’s deliberate rumination brought peace during the events of Jesus’ birth and His life (Luke 2:9).

This young virgin thoroughly contemplated Gabriel’s words that provided strength for her lifelong endurance. Without retaliation, she waited patiently as townspeople shamed her. Silently, she left to God the responsibility of clearing her virtue

“But Mary treasured up all these things in her heart and pondered over them often” (Luke 2:19).

By divine decree, we have appointed seasons and designated times for every matter under heaven (Eccl 3:1).

Subsequently, we can allow a calm spirit to rule and reign in us. Memories of overwhelming hurts will dissipate, and we can outlast (even) the bitterest of disappointments “set your minds on things above, not on earthly things” (Col 3:2).

More than anything Father, we need Your wisdom. Teach us to dwell upon Your character, developing godly sons and daughters. Amen.
