Artists serving the left are in a state of stupefaction after the American elections. Certain of their cultural influence, many had planned exhibits extolling the ascension of Dear Leader II. These were cancelled, leaving a dearth of scheduled hoopla and smugness. What to do?
Some artists, such as Annette Lemieux, recycled work and resurrected past glories. After the election, she requested her exhibition at the Whitney, “Left Right Left Right,” be turned upside down. Museum officials agreed, and now her series of clenched fists are pounding at the floor. It was created during the 1996 duel between Clinton and Dole, which was acrimonious – but nothing like our latest. Lemieux may turn it back again someday. But not now, because, as she said to Art Newspaper, “right now is a really dark time.”
