IMMIGRANTS BLAST U.N. IMMIGRATION POLICY

If people had 'decent work, we wouldn't have to migrate'

Curtis Ellis

UNITED NATIONS – U.N. immigration policy is helping global corporations exploit cheap labor worldwide, charges a pro-immigrant group as the U.N. prepares to welcome the pope and world leaders this week.

The U.N. Sustainable Development Summit this Friday will endorse a number of goals to address poverty, inequality and climate change. The summit coincides with the pope’s address to the General Assembly.
Eni Lestari, chairman of the International Migrants Alliance, a leftist NGO, accused the U.N. goals of aiding and abetting corporations “to exploit labor and drive down global wages.”
Lestari took aim at the U.N. policy on “economic migrants,” a term of art for those who leave their home countries to work abroad.
One of the U.N. sustainable development goals says governments should encourage the “orderly, safe, regular and responsible migration and mobility of people, including through the implementation of planned and well-managed migration policies.”
Lestari blasted the U.N. contention that “mobility of people” and the money they send home, known as remittances, promotes economic development.
Economic migration “is simply a way to exploit labor and drive down global wages,” she said. It “doesn’t provide decent work, and countries don’t develop when they depend on remittances.”
Lestari, who works abroad as a nanny herself, noted if people like her had “decent work we wouldn’t have to migrate.”
But that’s not the U.N. position. The global body consistently promotes migrant work as a means of economic development.
report titled “Banking on Mobility,” by François Crépeau, United Nations special rapporteur on the human rights of migrants, declared “migration is here to stay,” since it’s “a long-standing part of the human condition” and “inevitable” in the globalized economy of today.
His report echoes the U.N.’s sustainable development goal, calling on governments to construct “legal and safe mobility solutions” and “migration policies that facilitate mobility and celebrate diversity.”
The U.N. secretary general’s special representative on international migration, Peter Sutherland, has also pushed for open borders for so-called migrants.
Sutherland, who served as the first director-general of the World Trade Organization and has been called the father of globalization, said all “individuals should have a freedom of choice” about where to live and work. He wants to see a “shift from states selecting migrants to migrants selecting states.”
But that ignores the fact that “there is something happening back home that forces people to migrate,” Lestari says.
“When they say ‘people can choose countries instead of countries choosing people,’ you are assuming that we are voluntarily leaving the country. No! I don’t want to be a nanny, but do I have choice?” asks Lestari.
When Sutherland says migration is a “crucial dynamic for economic growth,” he gives away the game, according to critics.
“Economic growth,” not humanitarian impulse, is the real driver of the U.N. immigration policy, the critics say. Having an ever-larger pool of labor available without borders is the goal of globalists.
Prior to holding his position at the U.N. on immigration policy, Mr. Sutherland served as chairman of Goldman Sachs International, the Trilateral Commission and on the steering committee of the Bilderberg Group.

My comments: Migrants almost always come from FAILED, CORRUPT GOVERNMENT Nations. If the Corruption were eliminated they would be able to have self-sustaining Societies.
