CHURCH LEADER: PREPARE TO BE SHOT

‘Be Prepared For the Possibility Each and Every Day That You May Be Shot,’ Church Leader Says

(CNSNews.com) – At an event at the National Press Club on Wednesday, Jim Winkler, president of the National Council of Churches of Christ in the USA, told a large crowd of black pastors and activists that “each and every day” they should “be prepared” for the possibility that they will be the victim of gun violence.

“Today, all Americans – all Americans – whether they admit it or not have to be prepared for the possibility each and every day they may be shot and killed or wounded, whether they are at a Bible study at church, sitting at a movie theater, teaching or attending school, driving their car down the street, standing at a bus stop or reporting on tourism for the local television station,” Winkler said.

“This is insanity,” Winkler said at the event hosted by a coalition of black Methodist churches and focused on ending “racism” in the United States.

“We black Methodists respond to the challenge to get our nation to confront the problem of racism,” Bishop Reginald T. Jackson, chairman of the AME Church Social Action Commission, said at the event. “It is prevalent in every area of American life.
“Racism is present in our criminal justice system where whites use more kinds of illegal drugs, yet while white America does the crime, black America gets the time,” Jackson said. “Racism is present through the insidious practice of racial profiling, where blacks are targeted for no other reason than the color of our skin.”

The coalition called for faith leaders of all denominations to speak from the pulpit this weekend as part of “Confession, Repentance and Commitment to End Racism Sunday.”
