CARSON IN VIRTUAL TIE WITH TRUMP
Neurosurgeon surges to near-1st place with billionaire

Ben Carson, the soft-spoken former neurosurgeon, has slid into a near-tie with Donald Trump, giving the billionaire businessman his first real challenge in the Republican primary race for the presidency.
The just-released numbers also show a shake-up on the Democrat side, with self-declared socialist Sen. Bernie Sanders climbing several points against the party’s presumptive front-runner, Hillary Clinton.
The latest New York Times/CBS News poll puts Carson at 23 percent, all the way up from 6 percent in early August. The same poll gives Trump only the slightest of leads, at 27 percent.
Carson has been catching a wave of support lately, in both Iowa and nationwide, serving as the quieter conservative to Trump’s bombastic approach. Neither have attacked each other much on the campaign trail, though Carson did call into question Trump’s faith within the past week. Trump shot back he thought Carson was only an “okay doctor.” And shortly after, Carson backtracked and expressed regret for the comment, however.
“There is no reason ever to question anybody’s faith,” Carson said on Friday. “That’s something between them and God.”
The New York Times/CBS News poll was conducted Sept. 9 through 13, and indicates Clinton’s support among Democrats and some Independents has fallen from 63 percent in July to 42 percent. Sanders, meanwhile, has seen his numbers rise during that same period from 10 percent to 24 percent.
