Iran said Monday that it has successfully launched a domestically-produced satellite into space. According to Iran's semi-official Press TV, the launch of "Fajr" marked the fourth Iranian-made satellite put into orbit.
The launch came after Iranian Vice President for Science and Technology Sorena Sattari said Sunday that the satellite would go into orbit this week.
The satellite's function, according to an Iranian official quoted by Iran's Fars news agency is to transmit images of the Earth's surface to ground stations. The Islamic Republic plans to launch three more satellites into orbit during the course of the next Iranian calendar year (March 2015-March 2016), according to Fars.
The Obama administration continues to push negotiations as the only way to resolve Iran's nuclear standoff with the west.
