DOING THE WILL OF GOD

HOW TO DO– by Stephanie M. White

But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth [therein], he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed. James 1:25 KJV

Many are stressing themselves out trying to figure out how to be a “doer,” still we remain a society that lacks in the “doing” category. Wanting to do is not enough; we can desire to do good and still find ourselves doing wrong (Romans 7:15).

James explains to us the Biblical method for being a doer. The word translated as “doer” comes from a word that means to abide and agree, to continue and observe. The word translated as “continueth” also means to abide. We cannot become doers without continually abiding – abiding in the Word of God.

James instructs us to look and continue. The word that “looketh” was translated from means to bend beside, to look within. We see in this definition that we must bend before we can look. What does bending have to do with anything? Bending represents humility. If we're going to abide in the Word we're going to have to understand our desperate need for the Word.

We're going to have to understand that apart from Christ we can do nothing; this is humbling. Once we recognize our desperate need for Christ / the Word, we'll find that continuing comes naturally. The person who looks and continues in the Word will be a doer because the Word produces faith and that faith produces Spiritual fruit. Spiritual actions are the result of abiding in the Word. A “forgetful hearer” is the person who neglects the Word! Don't be the forgetful hearer – abide in the Word!
