CALIFORNIA FORCES CHRISTIANS TO PROMOTE ABORTION

Liberty Counsel is filing a petition to the U.S. Supreme Court on behalf of three California faith-based, Crisis Pregnancy Centers. 

These pro-life alternatives to Planned Parenthood are being forced by state law to advertise an offer of "immediate free or low-cost… abortion" to their clients. This malicious law, accurately nicknamed the "Bully Bill," forces our clients to share a message profoundly at odds with their religious beliefs — one that directly contradicts what they actually want to say!

Obviously, the intention of this California law is to promote abortion. But the organizations we represent believe that unborn children are human beings who are much more sensitive to pain. These children deserve life and the opportunity to pursue happiness. It is an egregious and dangerous overreach of government to demand someone promote the opposite of what they believe. Essentially, the state of California is obligating our clients to participate in the murder of innocents, which should shake every freedom-loving American to the core.

Crisis Pregnancy Centers are under assault by big-money, pro-abortion bullies. The National Abortion Rights Action League (NARAL), Planned Parenthood, and other pro-abortion titans want a monopoly on so-called "women's services" and are attempting to silence, fine, or shut down those organizations that protect unborn children and provide support for their mothers.

Conspiring with NARAL, California's lawmakers passed Assembly Bill 775. The "Bully Bill" demands unlicensed crisis pregnancy centers post a notice advertising abortions and abortifacients in up to 11 languages at both the entrance to their clinic and a visible location within the waiting area. In addition, it also must be included on their websites and in every promotional material they publish with a font size and/or color that draws more attention to it than the other words on the page.

The required notice reads:

California has public programs that provide immediate free or low-cost access to comprehensive family planning services (including all FDA-approved methods of contraception), prenatal care, and abortion for eligible women.

 
Furthermore, the law charges a cumulative fine of $1,000 for every repeated instance that the notice is not communicated to a client.

This law sabotages freedom of speech by forcing organizations to encourage actions that are in direct opposition to their religious beliefs and counter the mission and purpose of their organizations.
 

As you might imagine, there is no similar mandate for the abortion mills to tell their clients that there are Crisis Pregnancy Centers nearby! 

 

This is an egregious double standard and an overreaching law that is intentionally assaulting free speech rights and right of conscience.
 

+ + Liberty Counsel's legal team has petitioned the Supreme Court to hear our case against California's "Reproductive FACT Act." 

The right to speak and the right to refrain from speaking are both protected by the First Amendment and are among our most precious liberties! The California legislature is using the law and fines to mandate speech that will undermine pro-life facility operators.

P.S. Assembly Bill 775 requires that California's faith-based crisis pregnancy centers advertise a state-drafted, pro-abortion message and encourage women to commit human genocide. This law forces pregnancy help centers and staff members to be puppets of the "progressive" state and channel the state's abortion message. This forced speech violates the First Amendment!
