HUNDREDS OF MIGRANTS HAVE TRIED TO CLIMB A SPANISH BORDER FENCE, LEAVING SEVERAL POLICE OFFICERS INJURED.
By Joey Millar, The Express, May 9, 2017:Migrants climbing a border fence while trying to enter the Spanish enclave Officials said around 300 sub-Saharan African migrants scaled the six-metre high, razor-wire fence between Morocco and the Spanish enclave of Melilla early this morning. Three officers were injured and required medical attention after the chaotic rush, which occurred at around 5am BST.Local reports say one of the guards was injured by a hook used by migrants to climb the fence, another was kicked and another hurt in a fall.Three migrants were also injured and have been treated by Red Cross volunteers. They are said to be in a good condition.Several guard vehicles were also damaged during this morning’s incident. Spain’s two tiny enclaves in Morocco, Ceuta and Melilla, are often used as entry points into Europe by African migrants, who either climb over border fences or try to swim along the coast.Once in the territories they can apply for asylum or attempt to travel onwards into mainland Europe. Groups of migrants have attempted to enter the enclaves on several occasions during the migrant crisis. Over 1,000 migrants attempted to cross into Ceuta in January, but most were returned to Morocco.OVER 350 IMMIGRANTS CLIMB OVER THE CEUTA BORDER FENCE
Three police officers were injured during the incident During the January 1 incident police fought running battles with a more the huge crowd who tried to storm Europe’s borders and force their way into the Spanish enclave.The migrants used rocks and metal bars as they battled with police officers from Spain and Morocco, who joined forces to defend the border. Migrants regularly attempt to storm the border fences in Melilla and CeutaTelevision footage showed migrants perched on the top of the fence as they tried to get over.
