A Giant Symbol of Christianity Rises in Mao's Birthplace
May 12, 2017 by Rik Bokelman - HELLO CHRISTIAN
Mao Zedong, the former head of China's Communist Party, was a ruthless leader. He persecuted all religious and political organizations and is largely responsible for Christian persecution in China. In many parts of the country, you have to fear for your life if you're a Christian. Following Jesus has a price.
Although China is still persecuting Christians, now, near Mao's birthplace, a massive church is being built, reports New York Times. When completed it will even be bigger than the largest statue of Mao Zedong in China. It's another sign of the dramatic 'religious revival' where millions and millions are turning towards Christ.
Experts think in the next 30 or 40 years China's number of Christians could reach a high number similar to the U.S. or Brazil.

The Xingsha Church is part of a $617 million Christian-themed ecological park being constructed in the capital of Hunan province. It's inspired by Noah's Ark.
Thousands of Mao’s “red” fans reached for their smartphones and computers this year because they are against building the new church. 'Going for Christianity in a big way damages our nation’s ideological security," wrote Zhao Danyang of the website Red Morality Think Tank in February.
In Hunan, the province where the church is being built, communists and Christians live side by side in peace. Communists are also attracted to Christianity because they're disappointed in the Communist Party. Maybe one day in the near future Christianity will outgrow communism; something many thought would never be possible!
