Guard Your Heart
Denise Ferrell
“Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” (Proverbs 4:23 NIV)
If you attended Vacation Bible School as a child, you probably learned the popular children’s song, “O Be Careful Little Eyes.” The lyrics contain valuable wisdom. Consisting of several stanzas, the song uses a fun rhyme to teach children to use caution in their choices.
It instructs little eyes to be careful what they see, ears what they hear, hands what they do, feet where they go, hearts whom they trust, mouths what they say, and minds what they think.
Avoiding tempting circumstances is good advice for everyone. If we fail to guard our hearts, Satan’s cunning attempts to lure us into sin are made easier.
Consequently, our behavior and words are directly related to the thoughts, sights, and sounds we allow in our lives.
"Make a tree good and its fruit will be good, or make a tree bad and its fruit will be bad, for a tree is recognized by its fruit.” (Matthew 12:33 / NIV) If we desire to yield good fruit (actions that are pleasing to the Lord), we need to make God-approved decisions.
The best protection is the full armor of God (see Ephesians 6:13-18).
Pray that the Lord will help you choose wisely what you listen to and view.
Ask Him to guide where you should go and which actions to take. Allow him to be in charge of your thoughts and words and give you discernment in whom you should trust. He is always trustworthy and faithful.
