'The large groups split up into several different groups'

Four police officers were attacked and injured by students while trying to break up a street brawl near an eastern Pennsylvania high school in a shocking and violent scene that was captured on video.

As many as 200 youths gathered a few blocks from William Allen High School Thursday afternoon in Allentown.

"The large groups split up into several different groups," Assistant Police Chief Bill Lake told the Allentown Morning Call. "Officers found themselves responding to several areas."

As officers tried to pull the fighters apart, some of the boys and girls turned on the officers.

Three juveniles were arrested after the incident. The school district is now working with Allentown police to help identify some of the teens.

"I anticipate additional arrests," Lake told the newspaper. "There were a number of people involved. We just don't know their identities right now. We will be reviewing videos to identify people involved in the assaults on police officers."

A video posted on Facebook shows one officer who appears to be knocked down by a girl and then attacked again as she chases the girl.

The video shows a crowd of teens watching and yelling as officers try to restore order.

"It's not unusual for us to respond to disturbances by youths in that area of town," added Lake.

Approximately 2,500 students attend the high school, which has a mostly Hispanic population. Minorities comprise 85 percent of the student body, according to the website Public School Review.
